Reception

Mrs Swift is the teacher in our Reception class. Our PE day is Tuesday.

Class Saint

St Nicholas. Patron Saint of Children. Feast day is 6th December.

St Nicholas was a Bishop who devoted himself to caring for the poor and protecting children. He was a defender of truth and justice and during the persecution of Christians, he upheld the divinity of Christ. St Nicholas is an important figure in The Netherlands where, on his feast day, children put out shoes for St Nicholas to fill with gifts. Dutch immigrants took the legend and traditions of St Nicholas with them to the USA along with his nickname Sinterklaas which eventually became Santa Claus and part of the Christmas holiday.

Spring Term Curriculum Overview

RE

Galilee to Jerusalem

Children will know that:

  • The wise men visited Jesus
  • Jesus welcomes everyone
  • Jesus takes care of everyone
  • Jesus wants us to take care of other people
  • Jesus teaches us that we should share what we have with others

Desert to Garden

Children will know that:

  • We care for others in Lent
  • Lent is a time to grow closer to Jesus
  • Lent is a time to grow in love for others
  • Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey
  • Jesus died on a cross

Communication and Language

  • Learn new vocabulary relating to topic work,
  • Articulate their ideas and thoughts in well-formed sentences
  • Describe events in some detail,
  • Listen to and talk about stories to build familiarity and understanding,
  • Use new vocabulary in different contexts,
  • Listen to and talk about non-fiction texts to develop a deep familiarity with new knowledge and vocabulary.

Physical Development

  • Develop the overall body strength, co-ordination, balance and agility needed to engage successfully with future physical education sessions
  • Gymnastics focus: shapes, balances, jumps, rocking, rolling, travel
  • Ball skills focus: roll, stop a rolling ball, throw, bounce, catch, dribble with feet, kick
  • Develop the foundations of a handwriting style which is fast, accurate and efficient

 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Express their feelings and consider the feelings of others,
  • Show resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge,
  • Identify and moderate their own feelings socially and emotionally,
  • Know and talk about the different factors that support their overall health and wellbeing, with particular emphasis upon physical activity, healthy eating and toothbrushing.

Literacy

  • Read a few common exception words matched to Read Write Inc,
  • Read simple phrases and sentences made up of words with known letter-sound correspondences,
  • Spell words by identifying the sounds and then writing the sound with letter/s

Maths

  • Begin to use skills of conceptual subitising,
  • Begin to quickly see the sub-groups within larger numbers,
  • Use spatial language to describe sub-groups within arrangements,
  • Represent quantities in different ways,
  • Use a number track to play dice-based games,
  • Understand the ‘one more than/one less than’ relationship between consecutive numbers,
  • Compare numbers.

Understanding the World

  • Explore the natural world around them,
  • Describe what they see, hear and feel whilst outside,
  • Explore the change in the seasons from Winter into Spring,
  • Recognise that people have different beliefs and celebrate special times in different ways (including range of religions, celebrations around the world – including Shrove Tuesday),
  • Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including changing states of matter (focus on melting and freezing)

Expressive Arts and Design

  • Create collaboratively, sharing ideas, resources and skills;
  • Explore and engage in music making and dance, performing solo or in groups;
  • Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
